Since its establishment in 1967, the Wisconsin State Bicycle Trail System has experienced increasing popularity. The Great River State Trail is a recent addition to this system. The trail offers the visitor a unique experience due to its location and scenic beauty.

The Mississippi River is renowned for its history and beautiful scenery. The river is graced by majestic limestone bluffs that watch it slowly meander southward. These features, and many others, justify reference to the Mississippi as the “Great River.”

Now visitors can enjoy the beauty of this mighty river and the surrounding countryside by biking or hiking the Great River State Trail.

The trail follows the abandoned Chicago and Northwestern railroad bed and passes through the communities of Onalaska, Midway, Trempealeau and 2 wildlife refuges. Parking areas are available in Onalaska, Midway, Trempealeau, and Hwy. 35.

Persons interested in traveling shorter distances will have the opportunity to begin and end at any of these towns. Shuttle service is available by calling the Center for Commerce & Tourism in Onalaska. Reservations are required 24 hours in advance.

In addition to biking and hiking, the trail is also used for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Cross-country skiing starts in Onalaska and continues the entire length of the trail. Snowmobiling is permitted only in designated areas.

Eighteen bridges along the trail’s 22.5 mile length have been upgraded to accommodate bicycles. They cross several waterways including the Black River, Shingle Creek, Tank Creek and Halfway Creek. Bottomland areas provide an excellent opportunity to observe many wildlife species including songbirds, ducks, great blue heron, egrets, deer, squirrels and raccoons. The Great River State Trail is a great place for recreation, bird watching and fun!
